MAC joins MISA

Mar 10, 2021

This year, our Secondary students have the opportunity to join in with many other Christian and Independent schools in the Macarthur area as part of the MISA Sport Program. The Macarthur Independent Schools Association (M.I.S.A), is an association made up of faith-based schools from our local area who meet regularly to compete in a variety of sports, and also events such as debating and public speaking.

Mr Kea, our Head of Sports for Secondary says "while we strive for excellence in all areas of school life, one of the areas where our students thrive and enjoy being part of a team is sports, and so it's great to have the opportunity to be part of the MISA program this year".

Each Tuesday, our Secondary students in Years 10-12 will be participating in both Oztag and Basketball comps and our students in Years 7-9 will be representing the College in Softball, Volleyball and Field Hockey.

Research has shown that there are clear physical, social/emotional and academic benefits for teenagers when they take part in team sports and activities, with studies showing a direct correlation between physical activity and improved academic performance. Researchers believe that it may be both the improved cognitive ability that comes from playing sports, paired with the increased endorphins that lead to students feeling more confident to tackle challenging concepts and ideas in the classroom.

Team sports can also help foster healthy emotional development for teens, with research showing that students who regularly engage in team sports showing stronger self-esteem and a reduced risk of depression. Add to that the increased communication skills and sense of community that comes from being part of a team, and it becomes obvious that the all-round benefits for students go far beyond the field or pitch.

Macarthur Adventist College has long been invested in an holistic approach to the wellbeing of our students, and we are delighted that our students are able to be part of this established and successful sports program this year.
